While searching the internet for similar projects I ran into a couple of similar projects. The first one I found was a patent 5810736_Wrist_pulse_monitor on a wrist pulse measurement device. The device looks like a watch and picks up pulses through a special mechanism. It uses phototransistors a nd an IR light to detect the changes in wavelength of the light reflected. The light bounced off the wrist and based on the variations in light wavelengths it would count the pulses. This method is useful, however when it comes to building a similar mechanism the cahnces are the changes in the light would be too minute to be sensed by low-cost mechanisms. The second website I came across was a project for a non-invasive blood pressure sensor. This website used the delay between the wrist pulse and the elbow pulse to detect the blood pressure. The pulse was sensed by a piezo electric monitor annd amplified by two LM396 ICs and a low pass filter to remove the 50HZ noise produced by our modern electric devices. This method seems more feasible than using IR variations to monitor pulse.
